Saplings
Humboldt Roller Derby is proud to present the Redwood Saplings 2013 Program! Now in its fourth season, the Saplings program is committed to engaging young women from throughout Humboldt County in the game of roller derby. The Saplings program’s mission is to foster trust and communication between players while developing athletic ability, derby knowledge and strategy, and sportsmanship in a fun and safe environment. Through our Skate Skills and Derby Skills classes, ladies ages 11-17 have had an opportunity to experience a full-contact, team sport designed just for women.
This past fall the Skate Skills Class welcomed seven new skaters to our ranks as we spent 8 weeks developing our foundational skate skills. The Derby Skills Class, which is where skaters really get into the game of derby and have opportunities to bout and scrimmage, began on January 8th and will run through June 8th. As our program grows and evolves, so do our skater’s abilities and opportunities to play and compete. This year’s team will demonstrate their skills in monthly scrimmages, will travel to Sacramento to play against SAC City’s Jr. Derby team, and will play against SVRG’s Jr. Derby team at HRD’s double header on June 8th!
The Redwood Saplings program depends on the community for continued support. We want to thank all of the skaters and parent volunteers who help keep the Saplings program running each season, and invite YOU to become a part of this fun, rewarding group!
